That was... September

September was great! I've got to spend some time at home with my family and I also got to spend some time away. I didn't have to work too much and I had some time to concentrate on the stuff I really like to do. Unfortunately there were some not so nice things, too, but they are not going to spoil my positive post here...

So here's what September was like:

  • I had cheese from Amsterdam

  • I dyed my hair. It was supposed to be red...

  • I got to see some people I love

  •  I got to know Amsterdam. And fell in love.

  • I did some shopping and enjoyed it although I usually don't like it that much

What has September been like for you?

My top 10

Here we go with the things I liked lately...

  • Closet shopping
I've heard about that a lot but never done it before. You just open your closet for someone else if you have too many clothes you're not wearing anyway and they can try those things on an buy some of them. I did that this week and found some really nice dresses
this one, for example

or this one ;-)
  • Autumn
I love it, just like every year and the past days were just lovely

  • Boots
    Also an autum thing ;-)

  • The public holiday tomorrow
Because it means I'm going out with a couple of girlfriends tonight
  • Amy Macdonald
Currently listening to a couple of her songs and I just love them. Did I even tell you that I went to see her on stage with my Mum in August? She was gorgeous and it was such a nice concert...
  • Muffins
You know, I'd always choose cooking over baking, just because I prefer savory food to cakes and all. But I do like muffins and bisquits so I made quite a few lately. I also have some great ideas for more muffin baking which I might share with you soon
  • Looking at pictures like these
  • If you want to be a happier person, maybe you should stop doing some things
  • I am always thinking about getting a pixie cut again.
Who wouldn't want one when looking at those pictures?
  • Did you guys know that we have a lighthouse in Cologne?
If you don't, then you should really check it out, it's beautiful! See here and here

So, what were your favourite things lately?

Weekend Work

Guys, you know that I like beeing busy. And that's what I've been this weekend. Getting myself organized is always a big part of it but I actually had some "real" stuff to do, too.

A friend of mine is moving to a new flat next week and there was and is still a lot of work to do there. So I headed over to help with the painting and stuff.

there I am, having a break ;-)

I also had to read and recite a book I got over at lovelybooks. I really like reading and I love discussing the books, too, but it just takes a lot of time sometimes, especially when the book is really intense and you have to stop and think about what you read sometimes.

This one is about women in Saudi Arabia, Libanon, Egypt and other states where they are often treated badly and don't have the right to do things that we do every day like driving a car and so on. It tells the story of women who fight for their rights, who win and who sometimes lose everything they have. I really got into these stories and was close to tears not only once. Real good read but not just a thing you read before going to sleep.

The next thing on my list was doing some knitting. Because I'm still planning to sell my things in the near future I asked people what they would like me to knit. I got two orders from friends and I'm currently working on the first one, which is so much fun:

Hat "space invaders"

I wasn't sure if this will work out but my first try looks pretty good, as you can see. I'm a bit proud of it and I hope it'll turn out as expected in the end.

The last thing I was working at was a label that I can put on my things, which is now nearly finished, I think but I still have to figure out where to print the labels and how much this is going to cost me. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with things so far.

What other ideas do you have? What kind of hat/scarf/gloves... would you like to have? I'm always glad when people tell me what they're looking for and I'll try my best to realize those things.

How was your weekend?

Music of the month

Here's some of the music I liked in the past weeks

  • Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Same love

  • Katy Perry - Roar
I don't know why but it's really catchy, I kind of like it and I'm humming it all the time
  • Maxim - Rückspiegel
It's so poetic, a bit sad but still so positive...

  • Avicii - Wake me up
I still like that one although it's a bit older already
  • Labrintth - Express yourself
Whatever you do, do it good! Gave me a lot of power during the last months (and is still on my workout-playlist)

What have you been listening to lately? I'd love you to share!

My Top 10

This week is pretty relaxed so far, I'm still on my break from work and I hope to get a couple of things done. Today a friend from Brazil is here to visit so I'll keep this one short...
  • Being on Holidays
I am on a three week break from work and it's been great so far. I have been to visit my parents, went on a trip to Amsterdam and am currently having a friend over from Brazil. Next week my cousin will come to visit and there will be some going out during the next days. And the other days... I hope I will just have some more nice weather, a relaxed time and do some nice things.
  • This book
my Dad recommended it to me and I really love it.

  • Reading in general
When it's getting a bit colder outside I just love to sit on my couch with a cup of tea or hot chocolate and read a book. I'm glad have a bit of time for that at the moment.
  • This show
I found the whole box when I was visiting a friend for his birthday and he gave it to me so I can rewatch all of the episodes, yay!
  • I planned to go to the Octoberfest with some friends and I wanted to wear a dress like this
  • Amsterdam
  • My new glasses
I broke my old ones so this will be my new pair. I will get them next week. Can't wait!
  • Having a drink with my Brazilian friend

  • This song

  • Going to bed early. And that's what I'm going to do now....

That was Amsterdam

I'm finally on a break from work and trying to make the most out of my free time now I went to visit my family first (always love to get home for a couple of days!). I got to see my cousin who had spent half a year abroad (on Gran Canaria for an internship, I'm so jealous...) and I also got to see some friends I don't see that often.

me, my brother and my cousin. <3

When I got back to Cologne I only had one day before I headed to Amsterdam with Caro, Eva and a girl who works with Eva. I have been to the Netherlands and love it a lot there, I even started studying Dutch recently, but I had never been to Amsterdam. What can I say, I just loved it. I really like the Dutch, they are friendly, helpful people, whenever they noticed that we are German they started talking in German to us, even when I tried my best to talk to them in Dutch, haha, obviously I have to work harder on that ;-) Everyone was willing to help us, people are smiling a lot and this may seem superficial but a lot of people there are really pretty (and tall!).

I'll never get sick of Amsterdam's architecture

Neither will you, I hope ;-)

A small piece of summer on a cold Amsterdam weekend

Don't think that something's wrong with your eyes or with my camera, those houses are really crooked. And these aren't even the worst ones ;-)

Because we didn't have a lot of time we needed to get to know the most important stuff around there pretty quickly so we took a free guided tour through the streets of Amsterdam. There are lots of museums and indoor things as well but you can spend hours just walking around, looking at the pretty houses, bridges, canals... I loved it. Our tour guide was a young dutch-canadian girl who really enjoys her job and as she also offers a night-time tour through Amsterdam's famous red light district we took another tour just a couple of hours later. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot about Amsterdam's history in general but also about the history of prostitution and how everything works there. How the Dutch handle those things is great. They are just a relaxed type of people when it comes to a lot of things, it's mainly: do whatever you want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. With legalizing prostitution and semi-legalizing soft drugs they are able to control things better and make Amsterdam a really safe place for everyone, families, older people, tourists... I really like it that way as I tend to think that every grown up should be able to decide what they'd like to do in their free time. Visit a prostitute? Go ahead! Have a joint in a coffee shop? Feel free to do it! I can imagine that growing your children in a place like that must be pretty amazing because it takes a lot of the mystery out of those things and that's what the people there say as well, there are very little teenage pregnancies and stuff. Anyway, it doesn't really matter what you think about those things, Amsterdam is a great place anyway and if you get the chance, you should definately go there. I will go again for sure!

I love that you're always so close to the water

See that house that is a brighter red than the others? This is an actual house, one of the smallest in the city

Believe me, I do!

One thing that is really crazy in Amsterdam is the traffic. Cologne is bigger than Amsterdam and there are thousands of cars driving around here although driving in the city is just horrible. In Amsterdam with all the narrow streets and bridges driving is impossible so most of the people there are going everywhere by bike. If you think that this is the safest way to get anywhere, well, I don't think so. They have a terrible speed, nobody is wearing a helmet, no one ever uses their brakes. They are carrying everything on their bikes, their shopping, small pieces of furniture and their children. To me it looks really dangerous but everyone seems to know how to do it. As I use my bike very often I thought I was good at it but this is pure craziness. Anyway, the city is very "fiets"-friendly and there are lots of streets only for bikes. It's kind of cool but you seriously have to practise.

The triple X stands for Amsterdam and this sign says it all. The Amsterdamers are crazy about their bikes

I could go on for hours telling you how much I enjoyed our little trip but I'll leave it to that. If you have ever been to Amsterdam and want to talk to me about it, feel free to leave a comment, I'd be thankful for more tips for my next trip there and I'll share mine with you if you'd like to go there for the first time.

Jenny, xoxo

PS: Just to make sure everyone gets it: I don't think prostitution is a good thing. I'm just saying that it has always been there and always will and by making it legal you make sure that the girls are in a safe place and can make their own choices.
I also don't think drugs are a good thing. But neither are cigarettes and alcohol and yet they are legal in most countries. By tolerating soft drugs to be sold in places with a license you can keep people from buying filthy, even more unhealthy stuff out in the streets.

That was June

June is my favourite month of the year. Not only because of my birthday but also because it's usually filled with warm, not too hot days, first times at the lake, first nights out wearing t-shirts and because I always have a little break then. Back in school we had a two week break and still I usually take a few days off work around my birthday. This June was a bit different, because it's still not too warm outside, it rains a lot and I don't even think about going swimming and stuff. Anyway, after a couple of rough weeks my two week break came just in time.

So this year, June was:

Lazy days, working out at the gym, reorganizing my living room, going on a weekend trip to Berlin, visiting my family, celebrating my cousin's 30th birthday, missing my friends because I didn't get to see them a lot, spending time thinking about the future, getting the notice that I have been accepted to the further studies program, having trouble with my former landlord and being broke. Some ideas in my head finally grew to a realistic state, I joined another blog and am now reviewing books, I didn't dance a lot but played the piano like a lunatic. I cried a couple of times but I got to laugh even more. All in all, June was good, it gave me some motivation and some ideas and now I am so ready for July.
